Mary Earps has responded to a “hurtful” jibe from a Manchester United fan

Mary Earps has responded to a “hurtful” jibe from a Manchester United fan who accused her of being “too important” to mingle with supporters. The comment in question was made on social media after United’s crushing 5-0 victory over Everton in the WSL on Sunday. Earps played the full 90 minutes in that contest, with another clean sheet secured by the England international goalkeeper.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

While her performances on the field continue to generate plenty of praise, her behaviour off it has attracted surprising criticism. Earps has found herself tagged in a comment on Instagram that read: “Thank you Ella Toone & Nikita Parris for stopping to meet my daughter today. It’s a shame Mary Earps is far too busy and important to stop for her fans these days!!”

WHAT THEY SAID

Earps has won a legion of new admirers off the back of her performances for United and England and insists that she continues to make as much time for them as possible. She responded to her detractor in an Instagram post of her own by saying: “I try to ignore comments like these – but after a great win & spending so much time post-game meeting so many of you lovely lot afterwards, it’s hurtful to get home and get tagged in comments like these. Be kind. Happy Sunday. Love Mary x”

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Earps has been on United’s books since 2019, taking in over 100 appearances for the club, and has reached 43 caps for her country – helping the Lionesses to become European champions and World Cup finalists.
